Is Pluto a planet?
In the year 1930, an American Astronomer discovered Pluto. It got its name from an 11 year-old British Girl, who suggested Pluto as the name after the Greek God of The Underworld. She loved Greek Gods and Goddesses. So in August 24th, 2006, there was a debate whether or not Pluto should be a planet or downgraded to a Dwarf Planet. So is it a Dwarf Planet or still better as a Planet?
Yes, it is a dwarf planet.
It is believed that Pluto is a dwarf planet because IAU (Intergalactic Astronomy Union) set a list of qualifications a planet must have to be officially a planet. These rules are:- Must be in Orbit around the Sun.
- Must have "cleared it's neighborhood
- Must not be a satellite (orbit anything other than The Sun
- Nearly be round in Shape or atleast Spherical.
No, It's not a dwarf planet.
I personally agree with this. How could it be a planet so long and now not be? Will there be too many planets? What rubbish! Many argue that it is, and always be a planet. Some say because it's in an Asteroid Field is a weak excuse. If Earth and Pluto swapped positions, would Earth no longer be a Planet because it overlapped Neptune's orbit and was in an Asteroid Field? No, that's ironic. Also, why categorize some of the Solar System's planets as dwarfs all of a sudden? Thats like saying a shade of red is too light to be red and is green. Furthermore, Eris was a dwarf planet discovered in 2005. It's the largest of the five dwarf planets, and many consider it a Planet. What difference is Pluto, Make Make and the other dwarf Planets?
To summarize...
Sadly, Pluto will officially remain a dwarf planet. Yet there will probably be a debate for decades, until it is clear. In a couple of decades time this will probably be clear, but until then, there are 8 official planets, however some still believe there is 9. Nobody can disprove or prove it. What do you think?
